Extreme COLD Ends Global WARMING Protest March

Greenpeace activists Lonnie Dupre and Eric Larsen were forced to quit their crossing attempt of the Arctic Ocean due to unusually COLD and ICY weather.

They were attempting the crossing to call attention to global WARMING, however extreme weather conditions forced them to abandon what would have been the first summertime crossing of the Arctic Ocean, environmental group Greenpeace said on Friday.

A statement from Greenpeace said the pair encountered "unusual" heavy snow and ice conditions, and had to be evacuated by a civilian helicopter.

Greenpeace believes the cold weather conditions were probably due to global warming.

I thought quite seriously about that whole "global warming" thing last summer. Which was cold and wet and sucked.

It wasn't extreme cold, but unusually warm weather and heavy precipitation (both snow and rain) that forced them to abort the expedition.

From the team's diary:

"Eric and I were airlifted off the ice today, June 3. I want to share my reasoning for making the decision to end the expedition. There are vast areas of thin ice and slushy leads too thick to canoe across and too thin to cross by skis. This combined with the unusually deep snow has thwarted our efforts to go forward. In addition, the month-early breakup of the ocean sea ice caused multiple breaks in the ice and our backward drift early on in the expedition. I have concluded that summer has hit this region early, making travel extremely dangerous at best."

"unusually deep snow" always makes me think summer has hit early too.

I suppose these two guys are top climate experts, kinda like all there audio tape experts poppin out of the woodwork...

I'm not 'the' Tom, but I am a Tom... and I think the Global warming thing is just a make money project for Maurice Strong and some 3rd world dictators. But no, I am not the Kyoto protocol or 3rd world dictator expert.

Actually ALes, our climate expert "Tom" released this public servise announcement concerning climate change a coupela weeks ago.
This would have solved both the global warming AND the polar bear problems...

Not in the Arctic. When it gets really cold, you don't get that much snow, because cold air won't hold much water vapour. (That's why Montreal gets a lot more snow than Edmonton: it's because Montreal is _warmer_ than Edmonton.) The unusually deep snow is a sign of warming. And if you look through the team's diary, there's lots of other indications of warming. Such as rain.

There may be reasons to be skeptical of global warming, but this particular expedition isn't one of them.

Some more info from UCS:

"An increase in global temperatures will lead to an intensification of the hydrological cycle. This is because an increase in surface air temperature causes an increase in evaporation and generally higher levels of water vapor in the atmosphere. In addition, a warmer atmosphere is capable of holding more water vapor. ...

"Consistent with model predictions, weather observations over the last century indeed indicate an increase in precipitation over land in the high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere (Nicholls et al., 1996). For the United States, precipitation since 1970 has averaged about 5% more than in the previous 70 years (Karl et al., 1996), and cold season precipitation has increased by almost 10% during the last century. Over the period 1950 to 1990, annual snowfall increased by about 20% over northern Canada and by about 11% over Alaska (Groisman and Easterling, 1994)."

Russ, you sound like a pretty smart guy, so I'm not gonna scienticate here with you.

But..."precipitation since 1970 has averaged about 5% more than in the previous 70 years" - 5% increase 70 years aint gonna make me go build an ark.

and..."cold season precipitation has increased by almost 10% during the last century. Over the period 1950 to 1990, annual snowfall increased by about 20% over northern Canada and by about 11% over Alaska" - is bullshit. Ask any snowmobilier. Were lucky to get a month of good snow. A coupla years ago we had at least three.

Now Russ, maybe being in Vancouver and gettin rained on daily might be influencing your opinion ;)

Maybe Russel doesn't know this yet, this blog is not meant to accurately reflect reality. I guess maybe you should be on the progressive or Dippers blogroll then AlsoCanadian. :-p

How far north are you? You might be getting rain instead of snow.

"5% increase 70 years aint gonna make me go build an ark."

True enough. Whether global warming is happening or not is a different question from what to do about it.
