Canada's (dis)Honor Guard

Most nations today have a symbolic Tomb of the Unknown Soldier that represents the war grave of unidentified soldiers. They usually contain the remains of an unidentified dead soldier.

These memorials are usually guarded by an "Honor Guard", to show respect not only for the deceased, but for all that countries combatants killed in the line of duty.

Here are some examples of other nations honor guards:

the U.S. :

Russia :

Smaller nations will post an honor guard, like Greece :

and even Venezuela :

Of course, Canada also has individuals "hanging out" at our Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, as can be seen in the pic below...

Part of the charm of Canada's tomb is that it is so accessible to the public. In stark contrast to the other examples you've shown, Canadians can personally pay respect to the unknown soldier. Witness the hundreds (if not thousands) of Canadians who leave their poppies on the tomb every Remembrance Day.

Fox News Sunday did a "Power Player of the Week" Segment for Memorial Day on the head of the Honor Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. ExposeTheLeft has a copy of the piece here

I personally don't think a guard is needed. What's needed is a school system that instills respect for those that died for our country.

I agree with Richard, there has to be more emphasis in schools about this.

Everybody is misplacing their anger at some drunk chump who pissed on a monument precisely because he knew it would piss everyone off. Here we are stomping our feet when we were all out getting hammered on Canada day. I mean this is a non-event. Fine the kid and shut up. We are not the American right and we don't worship a mythology of war. Be reasonable - Harper is once again playing to all the disgruntled whiners in this country and using the kid as a scapegoat. It's just a piece of stone. My grandfather fought in WWII and no fucking rock is ever going to replace him. Think people, for fuck sake - don't always just burst into tears about everything.

Leave it up to the schools to instill respect?

What planet are the above posters from? Decades of liberal teacherese seems to have done *wonders* in this regard -- esp. when most of them can't even get the facts about world wars right!

Despite Bill's rather inept wish to "fine and forget", when so little respect is afforded to our war dead, the answer isn't to run to that tired old whore of "anything but America", but to start drawing a line in the sand and stop letting our country slide into some meaningless morass.

It all begins with showing that these memorials are more than just "pieces of stone" or "fucking rocks".

Unfortunetly Chris this incident has just brought out all the band wagon jumpers. Nobody gives a fuck about veterans but they sure give a fuck about looking like they do. Why don't people help develop policy that protects the people of this nation from getting involved with other's country's rumbles rather than act like we're in a movie and send our beloved off to death with dramatic tears and superficial pride. Some kid drunkenly pisses on some monument nobody looks twice at and all of a sudden were all turn into Pharisees. You don't even know what your mad at. I mean bringing up the Liberals? For fuck sake. How irrelevant can you get.

All this tells me is that we need to build a national "BACKBONE!!!".

Say what you want but I want a tough, I mean a TOUGH law that does two things. 1. Applies harsh penalties on punks that commit these kinds of "insults" against those who gave up their lives so they don't have to live under "HITLER" rules. 2. Our schools need to do alot better job of teaching, in a real and dynamic way just what our Canadian human sacrifice was in WW1, WW2 and the Korean war.

More than that, our schools need to "personalize" that teaching by researching Canadian war archives and bring forth actual fallen soldiers' stories from the areas where students live so they can begin to identify with them in a closer way. Teachers might even bring into their classrooms relatives of those who died so their story can be related from a personal point of view.

Lets face it,we do a lousy job of teaching our kids about the heroic way that our Canadian soldiers have protected our liberties over the years. Too often we seen teachers gloss over the subject of war as being something we should not talk about. Too often our children have been taught to sing "cum by ya" and let the oppresors do their thing. If we try to stop them, more will die.

Is it any wonder that some, not many, of our young will piss on a war monument rather than bow their head and give thanks. Is it not time for Canada to develop a collective "bakebone" and absolutely not tolerate this kind of behavior? We are slip-sliding away - admit it or not. Let's get our act together, people.

The hewn cry rings out: “outrage, disgrace, abomination”, all apt word to describe what the reaction should be to someone urinating on the National War Memorial. And from the outrage flows the call an honour guard.

Where was this outrage as the military was being dilapidated into obsolescence? Who protested to ensure our soldiers were properly equipped for the missions they were undertaking oversees? The answer is precious few.

A catalyst, one man’s pee has drawn the cry “guard the monument.” All the guards in the world cannot resolve the fundamental issue at the core of this misguided urination. How depraved does one have to get to urinate on the symbol of the sacrifice on which our nation was founded? That this could occur speaks more about our country then anything else. Guards aside, can you see this happening in England or the United States of America?

Guarding the monument isn’t a solution. If there is extra money for that it should be immediately funnelled to operational assets of the Canadian Military. The solution is a social one.

We as Canadians must realize that cenotaphs across our great country are sacred ground. They represent the sacrifices made to ensure that our way of life can continue. We must hail them not simply on November 11 but on each passing reflecting that but for them we might not know the life we now enjoy. It is only when we truly believe this that any war memorial can be safe.

It is not solely the duty of schools to instil this national pride it is the duty of every Canadian. Be they serviceman or servicewomen, teacher, veteran, politician, judge or justice, househusband or housewife, coach, mentor, clergy or any other of a million occupations across this land. We cannot leave it to one group we must all keep the faith. As the poem In Flanders Fields say: “To you (that’s all of us) we throw the torch, Be yours to hold it high, If yee break faith with us who die we shall not sleep though poppies grow in Flanders Field .” (Emphasis added mine)

Bill, your grandfather fought in WW2. Good! What have you done? Sweet fuck all is my guess.

You try to use this outrage as some excuse to smear Harper and Americans. If you don't mind me using your language for a second FUCK THE HELL OFF YOU DUMB-ASSED LEFT WING CUNT!!
You get pissed off that people bring up the Liberals and call it irrelevant, when you just finished bringing up Harper and Americans, (THAT'S relevant?).

You barely mentioned the kid and you never mentioned whether you think what he did was wrong or not. So I must assume that you are ok with it. It figures that a gutless lefty weasal who hides behind his dead grandpa would be ok with some asswipe pissing on a memorial. Maybe I should go piss on on old gramp's grave, hmm? Would you be so understanding about that, you dumb fuck?

We really need to get beyond the name calling and bravado shit! Unless you can post something that is POSITIVE - how about just sitting on the sidelines and let the postings come from those who are "civil" regardless of what side of the issue they stand on?

One cannot defend those who have died for freedom of one's opinion, on one hand, and call someone some really tasteless names, on the other, because they have an opinion different than yours, no? Let's get a perspective here. The side that says the "piss on memorial" was a huge insult to our fallen veterans, not to mention those who survived and still live amongst us, can express that emotion validly without disallowing those who think other wise. Those who think otherwise reveal studipity, insensitivity, ignorance and intolerance quite adequately without us putting exclamation points on their stark hatred for all that a good and just society stands for. Lets not give them any more attention and deference than they neither deserve nor are due.

Bob, I'm going to say this and then go to bed. BUGGER OFF!

I've served in the military twice. I rejoined after Sept11.

I don't feel like standing idly by while some dickhead like Bill defends a similar dickhead simply for some antiAmerican antiHarper gain.

If you don't like the tone of my posting, TOUGH SHIT. Take you wonderfully oh-so-tolerant sensitivity and shove it up your ass.

Don't tell me about what values Canadian soldiers defended asshole. I know already because I'VE DONE IT! Have you? No? Then shut up.

I would think pride, patriotism, good manners, self-respect,singing O Canada in school, as with God Save The Queen. And blow off all this multi-cultural tolerance crap; When in Rome..blah blah, when in Canada, integrate. If you need something to piss on in Ottawa, try a damned toilet.Or your own shoe. For all I know, that tomb has a relative of mine...DO NOT DO IT AGAIN.
An Honour Guard , is just that, A simple symbol of Respect, which is something a few of us seemed to have lost, even for ourselves.

It would make a lot more sense to set up a few public washrooms rather than an honour guard. If you have ever walked around Ottawa you'll know that there are very few public facilities.

John:

I'm so sorry that my pragmatic approach to this situation has got you all up in some frantic and drastic action kind of mood. Maybe being in the military was not a good place for you. You now seem to think that unless one has worn the uniform, one is not entitled to an opinion. Gee, that maybe means that you believe in a a military dictatorship.

Is it at all possible that you, John, can express yourself in a civilized manner? If not, maybe you should be seeking some assistance (mental) so that you can communicate with the rest of the country in a manner consistent with the way the rest of us communicate. Just look at your postings, John. What do you see when you read what you wrote?

A round-the-clock honour guard - excelent idea!
How 'bout the three young men (sic) who started the ball rolling this time around being enrolled into the Canadian Armed Forces and being the first servicemen detailed.
On second thought, that would mock the "honour". I still like the idea of enrolling those fellows though.

MY SUGGESTION WOULD BE TO FIND THEM - FINE THEM AND THEN TURN THEM OVER TO THE MILITARY - SO THAT THEY COULD LEARN FIRST HAND ABOUT THE CANADIAN MILITARY AND THE SACRIFICES THEY MADE AND STILL MAKE TODAY. PERHAPS A MONTH IN AFGHANISTAN ENDURING THE HEAT AND EXHAUSTION OUR SOLDIERS EXPERIENCE. PERHAPS LISTENING TO THE SOUND OF GUNFIRE AND EXPLOSIVES AND ROCKETS OVERHEAD WOULD BRING THESE YOUNGSTERS
UP TO SPEED ON JUST WHO IS SERVING AND PROTECTING THEIR FREEDOM. SHAME ON THEM.

If individuals, such as the fellow who urinted on the tomb, Bill and Bob, have no respect for the dead how can one expect them to respect the living or themselves? All 3 are a pathetic lot. What those 3 individuals need is a good stint, in the Canadian, U.S. or British armed forces, but then again, fragging was invented for the ilk of those 3, as well as a good courts-martial.

Theo

P.S. I am sure Sword or Juno Beach means nothing to those 3. No doubt Bill's Grandfater has rolled in his grave by now. There is no excuse for showing disrespect for people who gave their lives for their country. If it were not for the sacrifice of the WW 2 vets, German would be the national language of Canada, the UK and the States. Hitler and his henchmen would have most likely taken the urinator, Bill, and Bob and exterminated them as vermon.

We don't need an honour guard, just catch the three losers and have them spend the day cleaning the monument from top to bottom in front of the media on a nice hot day! Perhaps with a public apology in front of the memorial to a representative group of War Vets.

Bob, I am really sick of wussies like you. When confronted by someone like Bill your response is to timidly ignore him and hope (desperately) that he goes away on his own.

When someone like myself decides to fight fire with fire then you attack *ME* for incivility because I "stooped to Bob's level. Actually in your cowardice you see me as the easier of the two opponents so you attack me.

"You...think ...unless one has worn the uniform, one is not entitled to an opinion. ...you believe in a a military dictatorship."

Yes, "Stephen Hawking" (what an incredible leap of insight). That's exactly what I said.

My point was to ridicule you. You talk of rights and the sacrifice of others without ever getting any dirt under your delicately manicured fingernails yourself.
You lecture others from your comfortable ivory tower about freedoms but have no intention of doing any grunt work to ensure those freedoms continue to exist.
When a troll like Bill comes around and attacks that which is good about our country, rather than fight him you pretend to be so noble because the alternatives are supporting him or cowardice for not opposing him.

Now, before you accuse me of exaggeration. This is a blog and not a doctoral thesis. I have make my point bluntly and briefly.

Gutless pansies like you always call for tolerance because you are deathly afraid a battle might ensue that you will be expected to participate in.

Down deep you resent military people because you never had the nerve to sacrifice your own comfort or possible safety for an ideal.

You are a wuss. Get out.

Man, some of you people are sooo lost. The problem with what happened isn't that some drunks peed on a stone, what is sick is that there is a soldier buried there. It is a consecrated burial ground. Not to mention that the monument is like a gravestone for all the vets that have died serving Canada. What made things worse was the number of people who cheered on these assclowns.

Would you want someone going and pissing on your grandfathers grave? what about your Dad or Uncle or sister?

An Honour Gaurd can be readily made up from trainees stationed at CFB Petawawa. The logistics would be minimal, the disruption to their training schedule would be minimal and the cost to the Armed Forces infintesimal.

The Honour Gaurd would be a tradition every serviceman would be honoured to have been a part of.

Bill, it's rather unfortunate that you lack the maturity to discuss issues rationally and intelligently.

You malign me as being "irrelevant" because I used the word "liberal". I'm left to assume this is because you have a very narrow understanding here, perhaps thinking I meant the "L"iberal party (of either Ontario or Canada).

Rather, I am referring to "liberal" as in the lax ideology of "anything goes" and "run and hide". Things that you most likely would agree with.

But this is all beside the point - you've offered nothing to support your argument for officially allowing monuments to our war dead to become "fire hydrants" for ignorant kids besides "leave it up to the schools", "ignore world conflicts" and "fine and forget".

Please, do all concerned a favour and become a little better informed before you lash out.

Maybe you have trouble getting it up or something but your vitriol is hard to take.

This idiot represents the level to which our world (Canada included) has dropped - the level where we sit around and discuss how it is wrong, but we (well - the left/socialist side of the world) coddle our youth from the day they are born. Gotta make sure little johnny or sally never has to experience anything that reduces their self esteem, praise them, disipline by getting down to their level and discussing with them as to why "we don't do things like that", coddle them, give them everything, never let their teachers raise their voices at them or for god's sake - disipline them, and they will grow up to be fine upstanding citizens like this young man -

"We" have created this situation where many of our youth think it is their right to desecrate others property and they know that their parents will be there to pat them on that back and tell them that it isn't their fault and then sue the hell out of anyone who dares to touch little johnny.

Then we sit around and argue from our partisan positions (throwing in a little barb about how this is Stephen Harper's fault cause he didn't put a guard around the monument) about how if the "government" just did more this wouldn't have happened.

Time to start instilling respect into our young people again. Time to start telling johnny's or sally's mommy and daddy that their little precious darling is BAD and will have to pay the consequences by going to jail/community service/reform school/military school - pick any or all.

Will it work - my take - not for 20 years if we start now!

Nope, Peter Warren doesn't ring a bell at all. Please tell me who this is. The reason I'd like to know is if your trying to insult me I'd LOVE to know because then I could respond accordingly.
An attention getter? Well, I guess I got YOUR attention, didn't I wuss? My original point about you attacking ME instead of Bill remains accurate. It's easier to attack ME for the TERRIBLE (and uniquely Canadian) crime of being impolite rather than get a pair of tweezers, find your balls and fight Bob for defending the pisser.
